Wendell W. Phillips, born Nov. 8, 1923 passed away peacefully at Heartwood Extended Care Nursing Facility Dec. 29, 2014. He graduated from Clover Park High School and served with honor in the US Army in WWII during the Islands Campaign. He received 2 bronze stars. He had three brothers: Gerald, Dean and Kenneth. All 4 brothers served in the armed forces overseas and returned home safe and sound. Wendell was the oldest beekeeper in Pierce County. He was also a loved, long-time member of Bethesda Baptist Church where he served for many years as a boys Sunday School teacher. The boys were so excited to be in his class for his teaching as well as his fishing, hiking and camping trips. As an avid outdoorsman, he knew the Olympics and Cascades well. Wendell also served as a deacon for many years, helped in a bus ministry and faithfully called on friends and shut-ins. His heart’s desire was that people around the world become disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ. His parents and brothers preceded him in death, but many cousins, nieces and nephews survive him. A graveside service will be held at Tahoma National Cemetery on January 8, 2015, at 10 AM. A reception for family & friends will be held at Bethesda after the graveside service at Tahoma National Cemetery.
