SMG Vernon Lee Ward Sr. U.S. Army Retired's Obituary
SMG Vernon Ward Sr., U.S. Army Retired, 78, passed away on February 14, 2015 in Lakewood, WA. He was born on June 16, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee to Matthew and Emma (Lacey) Ward.
Vernon proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, retiring as Sergeant Major. He went on to become an educational specialist for the military civil service. He retired in 2013 having served 50 years combined in the military and civil service.
Vernon was strong willed and could be stubborn, but was always there to lend a hand or listening ear when needed. He was a charter member and actively involved in the Tacoma Alumni Chapter of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, serving for many years on the scholarship committee.
He was also a connoisseur of music styles from Jazz to Rock n Roll, but especially loved the Blues and yearly attending the Monterey Jazz Festival since the 1960’s.
He is survived by his two sons, Vernon Ward Jr. and his girlfriend Emma Jones, and Keith Ward; sister Tosha; three grandsons, Vernon Ward III, Isaiah Hodges, and Cameron Keith Ward. Vernon was preceded in death by his Parents, brother Tommy, sister Louise and his beloved Roselyn Johnson.
