My mom Wanda Greene, Olga’s sister, enjoyed all the many adventures with Olga. Both Wanda and Olga worked at a little restaurant in Edmonton. The owners, Mr and Mrs Gobel, would take them places on their days off. The Gobel’s always talked about Vancouver, and Olga and Wanda thought it would be a good place to have a working holiday, a decision which would change the course of their lives. They maintained a close relationship even though they lived in separate countries and often travelled together to visit family.
I have many fond memories of Aunt Olga over the years, but one that stands out was during our trip to Tacoma at Easter in 1973. Easter Sunday and my younger sister’s birthday fell on the same day that year. Aunt Olga was preparing a big Easter dinner, and she thought this would be also for my sister Carrie’s birthday. There was a look of dismay on Aunt Olga’s face when Carrie announced she wanted to go to McDonald’s for her birthday dinner. Aunt Olga solved this issue by taking us out for lunch at McDonald’s, and then later, we enjoyed a delicious Easter dinner.
