Neil Arthur Smith's Obituary
Neil Arthur Smith, born April 14, 1933, died December 8, 2024. As with any life, there are facts and then there’s what’s important. He grew up with few resources but made up for it with insatiable curiosity, an artistic spirit, and a strong work ethic.
Like many men of his generation, he joined the army. It brought him to Fort Lewis and First Presbyterian Church where he met Olga Stray. They married over 66 years ago on June 21, 1958. Neil believed in the power of art in all its forms. He taught and directed church choirs all over Tacoma, most notably at Truman Jr. High and Central Baptist Church. His influence on his students and in these churches is immeasurable and ongoing.
His artistic influence was strongest in his home. His “sanctified stereo” only played classical music, his yard was beautifully landscaped, and he hand-sketched his personal note cards. Neil loved good food, reveling in discovering small, family-run restaurants. He often experimented in the kitchen like he was part magician and part mad scientist. Through constant exposure to the arts, he instilled in his children genuine art appreciation.
In everything he did professionally and personally, he looked to honor God by making the world a more beautiful place and by loving his family well. He is survived by his wife, Olga, his three children, Julie (Tim Mauer), Becca (Nathan Whitham), and Brad (Jennifer Park), six grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Tacoma, WA on February 8, 2025 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to First Presbyterian Church (Tacoma) or Cannon Beach Christian Conference Center (Oregon); or perhaps attend a community theatre, a symphony concert, a museum exhibit, or find another way to support local arts.
