Mie Arakaki Yamada's Obituary
Mie Arakaki Yamada, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 21, 2025, surrounded by her loving family. Born on July 1, 1943, in Kochinda, Okinawa, Japan, Mie was the eldest of seven children born to Junsuke and Yoshi Arakaki.
Mie met her husband, James Yamada, in Japan, and together they built a life and marriage that spanned 52 years rooted in love and resilience. As James pursued his military career, they moved to the United States and raised three sons—Masaki, Masato, and Masao—instilling in them the values of family, culture, and kindness.
A gifted chef, Mie shared her culinary talents in restaurants across California, Colorado, Hawaii, New York, and Washington State, specializing in authentic Japanese cuisine. Her food was her love language, and every guest who entered her home was welcomed with warmth and a delicious meal. Her generosity and hospitality made everyone feel not just welcome, but like family.
Mie never settled for a handshake—she greeted everyone with a heartfelt hug. She was a daily walker, a lover of parakeets, and a member of the Washington Kenjin Kai, where she celebrated her Okinawan heritage through cultural events and community gatherings.
Her greatest joy was her grandchildren—Trinity, Victory, Lincoln, Masanao, and Raiya—who lit up her world. She cherished family traditions, especially ringing in the New Year with Okinawa Soba, a ritual she believed brought good fortune and togetherness.
Mie was a huge fan of Japanese shows and dramas. She was also a passionate Mariners fan, but an even bigger Ichiro fan.
Family meant everything to Mie. She is survived by her devoted husband James; her sons Masaki, Masato, and Masao; her cherished grandchildren; and her siblings Seigi, Yasunobu, Yasushi, and Mutsuko. She was preceded in death by her parents, Junsuke and Yoshi; her brother Tomio; and her sister Mitsu. She also truly loved and, in turn, was dearly loved by her daughter-in-law Tina and adopted family Tani, Darani and Darian.
Mie’s legacy of love, hospitality, and cultural pride will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
