Marie was my dear, dear friend here at Mud Bay, Eld Inlet. She and I had many a lomg conversation over coffee or a drink! She loved the birds -- the gulls especially -- and we would watch them fly about --even go out and feed them. I treasure the memories I have of Maizie. Her good advice to me or a joke shared. Marie was my first "boss" and became a true lifelong friend for my wife, Georgene, our three children, and me. I began my 40-year teaching career at Clover Park in 1959. What a delight to work with and know, and what a help to me as a young teacher. We were also close to her parents, Nell and Henry. Miss Helmer was my French teacher in 1947-1949 at Clover Park. I wasn't doing well in class but I left classes early for safety patrol & baseball Manager. She chewed me out in front of the class one day and from then on I started getting all A's on tests, etc. At the end of the year she asked what caused my improvement. Although I was not so fortunate as to have a class from Ms Helmer, it was very special that she attended and spoke to us at our 1953 CP reunion.
