Margaret Lucille Elliott did not live to see her 100th birthday as was her wish, but she lived her 97 years with gusto, spunk and an ever-positive attitude about everything. She was a wonderful role model for all who knew her. Mar Read Obituary

Our father, Wayne Melcher, was Margaret's cousin. Dad's stepmother, Violet and Margaret could have been twins--they looked just like each other. When our family moved from Seattle to Virginia in 1957, Margaret kept in touch with so many happy adventures--in each letter she would mention some memory of them growing up together; after Dad passed away in 2003, Margaret kept in touch with us and again mentioned some unique memory of their time together in each letter. On behalf of the Melcher Girls (Leslie, Jan, Michele, Jody, Lindsay, and Shannon), Margaret will remain in our hearts. Our Family just found out about Margaret. Our condolences go out to her Family and Friends. She was a good friend of our Mother's at Canterbury in Bremerton for years. Though our Mother passed away in June, we always thought of Margaret and how our Mother enjoyed her also being from Manette. She always recognized us when we went to visit our Mom. How blessed our family has been having the privilege of getting to know and care for our father's cousin Margaret these last 10 years.
We have met many of her students and been impressed with the impact she made in their lives. We have also been amazed at the number who have kept in contact with her all these years. She loved them all.
She also had so many dear friends and though she traveled extensively, Bremerton was 'home' to her.
Margaret modeled courage and an ever positive attitude.

..four years later, but Margaret visited us several times, over many years, at our quarters on U.S. Air Force or Army Bases in Japan and Germany, enjoying our local and American friends and sightseeing with their help.
During our frequent visits with Margaret, bedridden at her comfortable hospice, she remembered all those adventures, and not only recognized our daughter, whom she had known from almost the beginning, but inquired about, and was clearly interested in her present life, as she had done with her students over all those years.
She remembered clearly, up to the very end, all those adventures and subsequent family gatherings in Bremerton, Port Orchard, and Tacoma.
Now tears form in our eyes as we drive by 56th and Orchard on our way to Tacoma, only a short block away from Margaret's final home.##imported-begin##Worth Gurley (2)##imported-end##

Margaret was such a good friend for Marian and me. I met Margaret (and Marian) for the first time when her car was the Mountaineers' arranged transportation to a hiking/camping trip at Sultan Basin in summer of 1953. "Miss Elliott" was my fourth-grade teacher at Manette in 1954-55. She had a wonderful energy, a vividness that shows even now on my retina. She was a good teacher, demanding and fair, and she would never have guessed it, but she created one of my most important moments--she took me aside one day and told me with a kind but firm voice that I was in fourth grade, and it was time to start being mature. Margaret introduced me to the Mountaineers on a Campcrafter camping trip in 1946 which led to many trips with her,especially the one where Worth and I were her passengers,then later married. She toured with us in England, then visited us when we lived in Japan and again in Germany and then brought my mother to Las Vegas, N.M. when Worth was at an Institute there. She was a dear friend of the Lundberg family and went with us on our trip to Hinkley, Minn. to commemorate the fire of 1894 which took the life my grandfather. She joined the Mountaineers in 1944 and told of hiking from the Rockdale Station to the original Snoqualmmie Lodge. She went on many Mountaineer activities with us and thoroughly enjoyed the many friendships made there. Our fond memories of Margaret run deep. Margaret was a true opera fan! She loved to attend the opera previews at the library in Bremerton, even when she could no longer get to the productions in Seattle. She was always cheerful, and interested in my travels. "Where are you going next?" was her usual question.

Our teachers have such an impact on us, leaving us with lifetime memories. Miss Elliott (4th grade at Manette Elem. School) was one of my 2 favorite grade school teachers, the other one being Mrs. Miller (6th grade at Manette Elem. School). My parents were also members of the Mountaineers and went on some trips with Miss Elliott. Also, she and Mrs. Miller came to a mini reunion of our grade school students once -- what a delight to see them in their retirement years, looking good and staying active!
