Lloyd Moritz Silver's Obituary
Lloyd M. Silver, 91, of Tacoma, passed away peacefully after a short illness on November 14th. Born on February 7, 1923 to Scandinavian immigrants Conrad and Lena Silver, he attended Stanley Elementary, Jason Lee Junior High and graduated from Stadium High School.
He is survived by his wife Caroll, sons Scott Silver (Hollie Macdonald), Todd Silver (Teresa), daughter Stacey Ogle (Ed), stepsons Jeff Thornburg (Jan), Jon Thornburg (Sheryl DeLeon) and Jay Thornburg (Laura), ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother, Dexter Silver and his sister Ardelle McLeod.
Lloyd served in the US Navy during WWII and earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the College (University) of Puget Sound. After graduation he served as the first manager of the new UPS Field House having played a significant role in its development and program. He married his fellow Stadium and CPS alum Mary Agnes Gallagher in 1949. Mary Agnes passed away in 1969 and he married Caroll (Thornburg) Silver in 1978. They had just celebrated their 36th anniversary on November 11th.
Lloyd was Sales Manager at Day’s Tailored Clothing until 1958, after which he joined the J.L. Darling Corporation, makers of Rite in the Rain all-weather writing paper products, and ultimately became partners there with Jerry Darling. After his sons, Scott and Todd, joined the firm in the late 70’s Lloyd was able to shift his interests to travel, his multiple real estate holdings and several additional business ventures including a jewelry store, a commercial fishing vessel and an ocean-going tug. He helped prevent a longtime local business, Cole Screenprint, from failure and saw it flourish under the management of his daughter Stacey and her husband Ed. He was very proud of the legacy of success at J. L Darling and Cole Graphic Solutions continued by his offspring.
Lloyd engaged his creativity and talent in carpentry by designing, building and continually improving his beloved vacation home on Vashon Island. He and Caroll shared their love for life with many by hosting parties and family gatherings there. They enjoyed wonderful travels together to Europe and Scandinavia and numerous trips to Hawaii with friends from the Fircrest Golf Club. In recent years they enjoyed winters at their home in Mesa, Arizona and summers in Fircrest and Vashon Island.
Lloyd enjoyed 54 years of membership in Tacoma Rotary #8, served on the board of the YMCA and was an active community volunteer in Fircrest and Tacoma. He was very generous to a number of individuals and community organizations. His joy for life and laughter brought smiles to many through the years and he will be missed.
A celebration of life in Lloyd's honor will be held at the Fircrest Golf and Country Club on Friday, November 28th at 1pm. Memorial gifts can be sent to the Pierce/Kitsap YMCA or your favorite charity.
