Larry Eugene Harris' Obituary
Larry Harris passed away on July 9, 2015 age 66. Larry was born in Tacoma, WA and lived in the area for most of his life. He attended Lincoln High School and joined the United States Marine Corps shortly after graduation. He served in the Marines from 1967 to 1973. While serving a tour of duty in Vietnam he was injured during the Battle of Khe Sanh. He received a Purple Heart for those injuries. He also received the National Defense Medal, Gallantry Cross and a Meritorious Unit Commendation for his service.
Larry joined the Fife Police Department in 1976. He enjoyed his contact with the community of Fife and working with surrounding law enforcement agencies. Larry was forced to medically retire in 1997 due to problems with a chronic illness. His illness kept him limited on what he could do, but at every chance he took the time to enjoy the outdoors. He liked camping, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed shooting sports and worked for a few years with the Tacoma Sportsmen’s Club.
Larry spent his last day surrounded by family. He was very tired, but had a visit with his dog, which brought a big smile to his face. He had a taste of his favorite chocolate cake, sipped some coffee and shared a little of his humor with us. Early the next morning tired of his illnesses decided to slip away to a better place, where he would again be healthy and strong. The Good Lord has another proud United States Marine added to his flock. And we are sure they will have better coffee where he is now than he was able to get here.
Larry is survived by wife Sheryl, son Mathew and wife Roselynn, daughter Allison, and his favorite 4 legged companion Boss, his Great Dane. Larry is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence (Ike) and Helen Harris, and his sister Carol Iverson.
The family expresses their thanks to the many relatives, friends and medical providers that made Larry’s life easier throughout his years while he battled Crohn’s Disease and most recently with the Cancer diagnosis. You made a large impact on his life and helped him both mentally and physically through many battles.
Services will be held on Thursday July 16th at Mountain View Funeral Home at 1:30 pm, with viewing from 12:00 to 1:00 pm. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
