Karen J. (Taylor) HooverAugust 26, 1949-February 24, 2008Karen passed away at home Sunday morning on February 24th in the arms of her husband, Hans. The last 24 months of her life she dealt with the gradual loss of the use of her body because of an incurable degenerative neurological disease.Karen was born in Tacoma to June and Jerry Taylor and grew up in the north end, graduating from Wilson High in '67 and TCC in '69.Karen worked as a medical record technician at Good Samaritan Hospital for 10 years before following her dream to be a teacher. After receiving her BA in Education and teaching certificate from the University of Puget Sound in '80, she spent the next 26 years doing what she loved-teaching children.Karen lived all her adult life in Ruston, a town she loved, with neighbors she cherished. Karen served many years on both Ruston's Planning commission and Civil Service Commission.When Karen wasn't teaching or tutoring, she would travel extensively with friends or family. Cruising was her favorite in later years.Karen is survived by her loving husband and caregiver, Hans. They were married 37 years. She also leaves behind her brother, Steve (Cindy) Taylor; sister Nancy Lynn; special niece Crystal (Jason) Geppert, and many other nieces and nephews.Karen's life was rich in friends and former students who also deeply mourn her passing.Karen was reunited with her loving parents, her youngest brother, Ron, and beloved stepfather, Howard Scott.A private graveside service was held on February 27th at Mountain View Memorial Park. A "Celebration of Karen's Life" will be held Saturday, March 8, at 4:00 PM in the Pagoda in Point Defiance Park. Donations can be made to UPS Dept. of Education, in Karen's name.
