Judith Meyer's Obituary
Judith (Judy) Ann Meyer was born on September 13, 1939, in LeMars, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her father, Carol Ott, her mother, Lucille Ott, and her husband, Rev. Robert Meyer.
Judy grew up on a farm outside of Cleghorn, Iowa. In the third grade, Judy met Robert (Bob) Meyer. They were eventually married on August 5, 1962. They followed the Lord’s call to Papua New Guinea in 1964 to work as Lutheran missionaries for the next 11 years. Elizabeth (Liz) was born in November, 1964 and David was born in October, 1966. Judy and Bob preached, taught and translated the Bible. Judy was also a teacher at Highland Lutheran School in Papua New Guinea.
In 1975, they left the mission field to transition back to life in the United States. They lived in Chicago for a year before heading to Trinity Lutheran Church on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, to continue to share the Good News. Judy taught at Trinity Lutheran School and eventually became the principal of the school. She also worked as a teacher at Redeemer Lutheran School in Redwood City, CA and also as the school principal at St. John’s Lutheran School in Bakersfield,CA and Prince of Peace Lutheran School in Fremont, California.
After 40 years of working in Lutheran education, Judy retired and moved with Bob to Steilacoom, WA to delight in her grandchildren. She spent many happy years tutoring school children, volunteering at Concordia Lutheran School in Seattle, WA, and gardening in her beautiful backyard. Judy was also an active member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Lakewood, WA.
In 2015, Judy moved to Merrill Gardens in Tacoma, WA. She continued to minister to the staff and residents there, who along with her family, became her support network as she entered her twilight years.
Judy is survived by her daughter Liz Comstock (Andy), son David Meyer (Lisa), and five grandchildren (Joseph and Jenna Comstock; Hailey, Josh, and Drew Meyer). She is also survived by her younger siblings; Richard Ott (Cleghorn, IA), Margaret Gianopolous (Reno, NV), Marion Ott (St. Paul, MN) and Laura Wolfe (Scottsdale, AZ).
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her name be sent to Lutheran World Relief (www.donate.lwr.org). The family would also like to especially thank the staff at Merrill Gardens in Tacoma, WA, for being there for our mom these last seven years.
May God continue to bless Judy’s memory among us and may her legacy of love and grace live on through our lives
