John "Jack" W. Nell's Obituary
John “Jack” William Nell passed away peacefully at home in Gig Harbor, Washington, on May 19, 2025, at the age of 95. Born on July 28, 1929, in Tacoma, Washington, Jack lived a life full of adventure, passion, and deep devotion to family and friends.
Jack spent his childhood in Tacoma. When he was 14, he joined the Merchant Marines, beginning a lifetime of interesting pursuits and a love for the open road—and sea.
A true motorsports enthusiast, Jack’s passion for speed and mechanics led him to the racetrack in Graham, WA, where fate introduced him to the love of his life, Sharon. Their story began with an encounter at the Tipperary Tavern and blossomed into a lifelong marriage. Sharon brought three children into the marriage, and Jack embraced them as his own with unwavering love. Together, they later welcomed a daughter, Dodie, completing their close-knit family.
Jack owned and operated a successful Volkswagen repair business in Parkland, WA, where he and Sharon raised their family for over two decades. He also raced Formula One cars for Tom Carsten VW at Seattle International Raceway, combining his mechanical skill with his competitive spirit.
Beyond the racetrack, Jack and Sharon were avid boaters and lifelong members of the Totem Yacht Club, where Jack once served proudly as Commodore. They spent 12 joyful years living aboard their boat in the Pleasure Craft Marina, deeply involved in the local boating community. For the past 35 years, they made their home in a beautiful house in Gig Harbor, surrounded by friends, family, and the waters they loved.
Jack was also a proud member of the Blue Barons Motorcycle Club, a testament to his lifelong love of motorcycles, friendships, and the open road. He loved riding his Harley and playing golf with the guys.
Jack will be remembered for his adventurous spirit, his deep love for his family, and his unwavering dedication to the communities he cherished. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, courage, and a life lived to the fullest.
He is survived by his beloved wife Sharon; his children, Tony Pettingill, Dodie Kritner, and Debra Hightower; as well as his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his memory and the values he held dear. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Anne Marie Nell, and his son, Gary Pettingill.
Fair winds and following seas, Jack. You will be deeply missed.
