James "Jim" Lyons' Obituary
James “Jim” Lyons, 89, of Federal Way, Washington, passed away peacefully in his sleep on December 17, 2025, at his home in Village Green.
Jim is lovingly remembered by his children, David and his wife Beverly, Karen and her husband Wayne, and Michael and his wife Thays; six grandchildren, Alexandra Miranda, Nicholas, Jillian Boyle White, Kelly Quintero, Sophia, and Evan; and two great grandchildren, Florence Renee and Sylvie.. He was preceded in death by his parents, David John Lyons and Mary Gladys Lyons née Vance; his sisters, Mary Kathleen Nolta and Mary Ann Argenta; and his beloved wife, Renee Diane Lyons née Heidenrick, his companion and partner for over six decades.
Jim attended St. Louis Preparatory Seminary and earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Detroit, followed by a master’s degree in engineering from Seattle University. He began his career as an engineer at Boeing in Seattle, where he met Renee, his future wife. They married in 1962.
From 1968 to 1999, Jim served as an engineer in the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program at Bettis Atomic Laboratory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His work contributed to the development and support of nuclear reactors that powered United States Navy submarines and surface vessels. After retiring in 1999, Jim and Renee returned to the Pacific Northwest and settled in Federal Way to be near family.
In retirement, Jim taught at Green River College and Tacoma Community College and served on his homeowner’s association board. He enjoyed golf, bridge, and long walks with family and friends. He will be remembered for his warm, unassuming nature; his fondness for family gatherings; his thoughtful conversations and lively debates; and his ability to recite poetry and sing Irish ballads, often shared earnestly and endearingly off key, bringing joy to all. His intellectual curiosity, quick wit, and ability to find humor even in trying situations stayed with him to the very end.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the Garden Chapel at Mountain View Funeral Home, 4100 Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest, Lakewood, Washington, followed by a reception.
