Ive always had unquestionable respect for my Grandfather. I still do, but in the last couple years I got to know my Grandpa with a much more personable friendship, instead of just as a father figure.
In mid 2021, I accompanied my Grandpa along with my cousin Mike to the cemetery to see my Grandma and bring her flowers. As we sat with her, meditating, God was with us as we appreciated the overwhelming experience of her unconditional love. Later in the day, now just Grandpa and myself, we picked up some Dairy Queen and parked, overlooking the neighborhoods down the hill. I took the opportunity to learn more about him and started asking questions.
I asked about his childhood, where he grew up, what school was like and what he missed. I asked about his early days in the Airforce, getting to hear multiple military stories, like being stationed in Lompoc CA fighting frostbite on the side of a Highway.
I asked where his favorite place to live was while his daughters were still young. He said it was hard to decide, but just like my Mother, Georgia was his favorite.
Finally I asked him about meeting his wife, my precious Grandmother. Where did they meet and how did it happen? Hearing him explain that he had known my Grandmother since they were only young children was just unbelievable.
I am so thankful to have had this time with my Grandfather.
A rolemodel, a hero and a friend. As much as I miss my Grandparents I understand that through God I am able to continue my relationship with them.
Special thank you to my Aunt Sheryl and my cousin Mike for dedicating so much toward helping Grandpa during his last years.
To all six sisters my condolences,
Ya'll are in my prayers.
We love you
