Hazel Irene Hoard's Obituary
Long-time Tacoma resident Hazel Hoard, aged 92, passed away peacefully early Monday morning, July 19, 2010, surrounded by her family. Born on March 29, 1918, in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, she was the sixth of the eight children of Robley and Mamie (Faurot) Read. She graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1936 and married Ellsworth (Al) V. Hoard of Rice Lake on June 25, 1938. They moved to Tacoma in September, 1940.
She is survived by son James (Jean) Hoard of Tacoma, and daughters Sharilyn (Larry) Anderson of Bonney Lake, and Denise (Joseph) Hanni of Sumner, as well as six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, two sisters-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.
She joined Bethany United Methodist Church in 1943 and remained a faithful and active member of the congregation thereafter. Beginning in 1950, she worked for thirty years as a sales associate in ladies apparel at the downtown People's Store, where she had a loyal following who appreciated her care and concern.
She was preceded in death by her husband Al and her seven siblings: Mabel, Marion, Lelah, Velma, Charles, Vayne, and Gordon.
A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend who was full of wisdom and light, she enjoyed homemaking, gardening, crocheting, and quilt making-"especially the quilts she made for children who were the victims of parental substance abuse. She leaves a legacy of compassion and strength.
A memorial service celebrating Hazel Hoard's long, fruitful, and generous life will be held on Friday, July 23, 2010, at 2:00 pm at Bethany United Methodist Church, 5634 South Park Avenue, with the Reverend Vincent Hart officiating.
