Hi All,

My deepest condolences go to your family at the loss of Hazel(Mrs. Hoard, as my father made sure I'd call her)she was a dear friend for many years and I always looked forward to seeing her in church; especially lately as it was a much rarer occurance. I am very sorry that I missed the service; I only just learned of it in church this morning(8/01/10). In fact, we just passed by the hospice where she was staying, and commented that we would visit as soon as she was able to receive visitors. I am very saddened that I could not pay a personal tribute and I know that my mom(Mary) would have wanted to be there also.Denise: my ph# is 253-203-8841- also, please email an address so that the family can send condolences also.

We ask everyone to think of a word describing Hazel Hoard.

"Gentle", "soft spoken", yes, those surely will come to mind.

"Saintly"? We've heard Sharilyn say countless times, "My mother is just a saint."

And I've often thought of Hazel's demeanor as "regal". It took many, many years before I could address her as "Hazel" rather than "Mrs. Hoard".

Will anyone choose, "determined"?

When Hazel was nearly 80, she broke her wrist falling out of her walnut tree. "Trying", she said, "to keep those pesky crows from eating all of my walnuts".

For years thereafter, every time I saw Hazel I would ask, "Been climbing in your walnut tree?" And with that impish grin, eyes sparkling, she would answer, "No, not this year." But the clear implication was that, perhaps, next year, if the crows were too pesky, she would.

Hazel's generation, our parents', faced more than just the usual "pesky crows" in their lives -- Depression, World War, trying to raise children frightened by the real threat of the nuclear nightmare -- not to mention the everyday worries of health, education and all of the other vagaries of daily life. Yet they were determined to do the very best they could -- the best they knew how -- for their families. And we and our children and their children are the the beneficiaries. I am sad to hear that Hazel has passed. We were neighbors when I lived in my house at 5911 So. Thompson. We would visit each other often & shared Many Memorable stories together. After I moved to Lakewood we still kept in contact with each other by phone calls & cards. What a Wonderful Friend & Person she was. I will never forget her. God Bless her Kind Soul. My thoughts are with you today and in the weeks to come. Hazel was a charming, resourceful, and independent lady. She was an inspiration - and a model of how to age well. Her heart and mind were full of help and kindness. I loved visiting with her and never came away from her yard without some mint or other perennials she wanted to share. Her smile was always ready and she loved to tease and have fun.
Families with such strong, beautiful women are fortunate indeed. It does make her loss greatly felt.
