George Neil Wessel's Obituary
On April 22nd George N. Wessel passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. George was born April 18, 1929 in Cleveland, Ohio, the second son of Elmer and Gladys Wessel.George served 20 years in the United States Army, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major in October of 1966. He received a battlefield commission during the Korean War in 1951 and maintained a commission as Captain in the Army Reserves after his retirement from active duty.After retirement from the Army he started a new career as a professional land surveyor. He owned G.N. Wessel and Associates in Lakewood, until selling the company and retiring in 1997. George was also an educator, having instituted and taught the Land Surveying Technology program at Fort Steilacoom Community College (now Pierce) in Lakewood.George was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Vivian; two married sons, Dan (Cathy) and Tom (Dawn); grandchildren, Jennifer White, Becky Abundis, and Erik Wessel; great-grandsons, Justus and Orion White; sister, Marie Lane of Texas; and brothers, Donald Wessel of North Carolina and Joseph Wessel of Nevada.Preceded in death by Eugene Wessel of California.GeorgeÂ's greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his great-grandsons who he referred to as his Â"little ones.Â"The family would like to express its sincere thanks to MultiCare Hospice of Tacoma for their love and comfort.In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to them in his name.Inurnment will be at Mountain View Memorial Park at 1:30pm on April 28th. a memorial service will be held thereafter at Little Church on the Prairie in Lakewood at 3pm.
