Ernest Franklin McAtee Jr. my older brother. We had such good conversations and he could open up his heart to me. One time he said, "I like my letters addressed Ernest F. McAtee Jr." He further said this is they way I sign important things." This told me that Ernie liked the idea that he was a Junior. In this way he honored his Father.
He was a helping hand whenever or wherever he could be. He showed such honor to our folks by taking Dad to his favorite places when he could no longer drive. He visited Mom and watched with her, the favorite game shows almost every evening. Ernie related to each that he knew differently according to their personality. One thing the entire family noted was that he like jobs and to help with his strength. I don't think there was anyone who helped people move to a new place more than he did. One time he went to Texas to move Ellen and David with there three young girls to Tacoma. He got there and Ellen was not well and the house was not packed. He got boxes, he packed boxes, he got a rental van and saw that they got moved to Tacoma. He move Frank and I from Eugene to Springfield along with brother Ken. And Ken would have to think hard to come up with the number of times Ernie helped him move in Tacoma, from home to home as his family grew. Our son Brent lived in the Tacoma area for a time off and on and enjoyed doing things with his Uncle, Ted remembers him well and liked him a lot.
Ernie truly lived out his life as that wonderful first-born child , older brother. uncle and grandpa. We all will miss him a lot and especially those of you who live in Tacoma and grew up around him.
Our heartfelt sympathy for you all and wish so much that we could be with you.
Frank and Charlotte and our two sons Brent and Ted Mecklenburg
