Douglas Orville Howe's Obituary
Douglas was born January 4, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and left us peacefully on February 4, 2007 at home surrounded by his loving family. Moved to Tacoma in 1923, graduated from Stadium High School, and Stanford University with a BA degree, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. Served his country in the United States Coast Guard during WWII. Was a Real Estate Broker before entering the fuel (heating) oil business, becoming Owner-President of City Fuel Company. Was a charter member and past president of Pierce County Oil Heating Association; served as an officer and director of the Oil Heat Institute of Washington and was on the executive committee of the Oil Heat Institute Regional Advisory Board comprising of the five western states and Alaska. An avid golfer, tennis player, and bridge player, he played in many local bridge tournaments. Belonged to the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, and for several years was a member of the Washington State Seniors Golf Association, the Seniors Northwest Golf Association and the Lakewood Racquet Club. More than his one hole in one, DougÂ's proudest sports achievement was having two sub-par rounds of golf in the same year, knocking his handicap down a notch to six. Was chairman of Pierce County Heart Association for three years, past director of United Good Neighbors, member of Tacoma Chamber of Commerce prior to retirement in 1980; served on the board of Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers; continued to be active in the Republican Party. For several years was on the board of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) where he greatly enjoyed counseling small businesses. Doug and his wife Ozzie enjoyed traveling, especially to Europe and Asia to see the great sights offered at these destinationsHe loved people, his many friends, and especially his family. He was a great husband, a great father and a great friend.Survived by his wife of 60 years, Marion Â"Ozzie,Â" Douglas (Robin) of Seattle, David (Kim) of University Place, Karen of Tacoma, and Robert (Susan) of San Jose, CA; seven grandchildren; Kirsten, Camille, Brian, Andrea, Julianne, James, and Ladd, as well as a great grandchild, Justice; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Roger A. of Lakewood, sister Betty Wanger of Hillsborough, California and parents Dr. Archibald W. and Gudnie Howe of Tacoma. To honor Doug, rather than send flowers, please send donations to your favorite charity. Memorial services to be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, February 10, in the Mountain View Valley Chapel.
