Patti and I have been best friends since we were 10, so I had frequent overnight visits at the Foss residence. Carol made me feel welcome, I loved staying there. I wasn't comfortable calling her by her first name, Mrs. Foss was too formal so we agreed I could call her mom. It was natural and fitting she was my second mom.
The first time I tried Top Ramen noodles was at one of Patti's birthday parties that Carol prepared. It was one of the best dishes I tasted, but has never been quit as good as when Carol made it. The same with Pattis' favorite birthday cake, she would poke holes and added jello. My attempt at making her cake failed, so I looked forward to enjoying it at Pattis' birthdays. She made a salad with her homemade thousand island dressing "Mom, what is the recipe it is so good!" Carol replied "it's just mayonnaise and ketchup!" Again, it did not taste the same when I made it. Either I am a really bad cook or it was Carol's added special touch of love.
Nursing was definitely Carols' occupational calling. While getting ready for the day at their house, I accidentally sprayed hair spray directly in my eye, it didn't matter how much water I would flush, I couldn't rinse the sticky stuff from my eyeball. Concerned and loving Carol, laid me down on the couch, her hands caressing my head as if I had been seriously injured. It was minor and a trip to the eye doctor was easily treated, but I felt comfort from her. Being a nurse she taught me that a full shower isn't always needed but a P.T.A. (you will have to ask a nurse what that stands for) is sufficient. She is right, somedays a P.T.A. is all you need.
I appreciated and enjoyed the many trips with the Foss family. Found my designated seat in their red station wagon and off we would go to either a week at the Warm Beach Bible conference, a few days in Spokane for the Basketball tournament, or just a day trip. Wherever we went Carol made it fun!
Carol is known for her impeccable musical talent. I was blessed to have her play the piano with Sharon and my cousin Kim on their flutes perform her rendition of "Holy, holy, holy!" It was beautiful!
Carol aka "mom" will be truly missed most by her children whom she adored, but also by those who loved her!!
