John Sprague
I read with sadness the announcement of Brian's death in Harvard Magazine. Brian and I were friends and classmates in Mather House.
I have thought of Brian often over the years, as a wonderful gift from him my senior year hangs in my home study. It is a photograph he took of John ("the Duke") Wayne on an early Spring visit to Cambridge as Hasty Pudding Man of the Year in 1974. The composition--Wayne standing in the bay of a mobile troop carrier on Mt. Auburn Street, surrounded by local National Guardsmen--is superb, regardless of what you think of the subject. (I happen to like him). I was touched when Brian gave me the print, and I have enjoyed looking at it ever since.
Brian was a fine person and I'm sorry to hear cancer got him so young. He's the second of our small Mather circle to leave us.
Kind regards,
John Sprague
