Axel J. Nielsen's Obituary
Axel J. Nielsen, 86, of Lakewood, Washington, passed away Monday, October 13, 2003, at his residence. Axel was born January 27, 1917, in Seattle, Washington.Axel and his beloved wife, Doris, were married June 24, 1941. They were not only joined by marriage, they also worked together as a team in the baking industry throughout their married life. The only time they were separated was when Axel enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. He was stationed in Hawaii until 1945. After that time they were never separated.Axel retired in 1980. After retirement, he and Doris built a 40 ft. wooden schooner, Â"The Robert L.Â" They launched the boat in 1986, and it is still being sailed by his family. Building the boat was a culmination of a life long dream.His outstanding attributes included great physical strength, honesty, integrity, and love and dedication to his loving wife of 62 years. Axel will be missed by Doris, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and friends.Axel is survived by his wife, Doris, daughters Shirley Pollock and Jeanne Wohlford, son Larry Nielsen, sisters Agnes Manning and Florence Wood, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. The memorial services to celebrate AxelÂ's life will be held at United Lutheran Church, 1231 South 76th St., Tacoma WA at 2:00, Friday, October 17. A reception will be held at the church following the services.A graveside service will be held at the Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 S. E. 240th St., Kent, Washington. The services will begin at 2:00, Monday, October 20.Visitation will be held from 11:00AM to 9:00PM on Friday, October 17, at Mountain View Funeral Home, 4100 Steilacoom Blvd. SW, Tacoma Washington.
