Arthur (Moe) M. Howarth's Obituary
Arthur Morse (Moe) Howarth joined his wife, Meliss, in heaven on January 16, 2018. Moe was born to Everett and Hilda (Morse) Howarth on May 12, 1925 in Fitchburg, MA.
After graduating from Middlesex School in Concord, Moe enlisted in the Army Air Corp where he flew B-25 bombers. Following WW II, Moe served in the AirForce Reserve, retiring with the rank of Major. It was during the war, while stationed in Wisconsin, that Moe met the love of his life, Meliss Challoner, his wife of nearly 70 years. They married September 23, 1946, and moved to Cambridge, MA, where he received a degree in engineering from M.I.T. The couple moved to Oshkosh, WI in 1949 where Moe worked for the Wilkin-Challoner Mfg. Co. For several years, they cared for foster children before starting a family of their own.
The family moved to Lakewood, WA, in 1969 where Moe was employed by Globe Mfg. Co. as Chief Engineer and pioneered several patents. In the 1980s, Moe and Meliss resumed their love of travel, often travelling with their close friends to areas around the world. In addition, Moe enjoyed boating, golfing, curling, water skiing, fixing anything and everything, and fly-fishing with his close friend, Gene Warning. An inspiration, he swam 40 laps almost daily and could often be seen rowing on Carp Lake. Incredibly, Moe beat stage-4 skin cancer at age 90 and remained in remission. Moe was a humble, easy-going man often heard whistling or humming and had a genuine smile that won everyone’s heart.
Moe loved his family dearly including his children, Doug Howarth (wife Jackie), Laurie Howarth Ammons (husb. Doug), Terri Lally (husb. Allen) and grandchildren Hannah Lally Fee, Meagan Swanson, Heidi Lally, Sarah Ammons, Everett Lally, and six greatgrandchildren. Moe was preceded in death by his wife, Meliss, who passed away in Sept. 2016 and by his sister Ann.
Family and friends are invited to a memorial on Sunday, January 28th to be held at 1:00 in the Aspen Chapel at Mountain ViewMemorial Park in Lakewood.
