Wynona "Nona" Dawson's Obituary
Wynona “Nona” Dawson
February 13, 1930 – March 12, 2021
Wynona (Le Crone) Dawson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother passed away peacefully March 12, 2021. Silver Creek Assisted Living had been Nona’s home since 2011 when she moved there from the country home she and her husband built in 1965.
As an only child of Samuel and Esther LeCrone she spent her entire life in the Tacoma area and grew up in the loving extended family of the many fraternal organizations to which her parents belonged: Masons, Shriners, Daughters of the Nile, Zora Patrol and Amarnath. As an adult she became an active member in Nile, Zora Patrol and Amarnath holding many leadership positions.
Nona attended Bryant elementary, Jason Lee JH and was a 1948 Stadium graduate. She attended University of Washington for one year before starting her family with Robert Dawson in 1951. A “depression child” with industrious, hard working parents, Nona never shied from challenging jobs and developed a great work ethic. She spent 32 years in food service at Tacoma Public Schools, working her way up from serving to baker to cook at Gray Junior High and ended her career as a supervisor of 32 elementary schools.
Always active in many organizations she also enjoyed gardening, cooking, entertaining for family and friends and sewing complete wardrobes for her daughter. An avid reader, she was interested in a variety of topics filling her home with books and magazines galore! Nona never met an animal she didn’t want to hug. She rescued many cats and dogs providing them with a loving, safe home. You could often find Nona curled up in her recliner with one of her cats and the latest James Patterson book.
Her family and friends lovingly describe Nona as feisty, resilient, gregarious, strong willed, vocal, determined, involved, opinionated and loyal.
Nona loved her family and leaves behind 2 children, Steven (Heather), Nonalee Cornell (David), 5 grandchildren, Lina Coambes (Jason), DeAnna Peppers (Jeremy), Jared (Adria), Anthony (Krystal) and Bryant Cornell as well as 11 great grandchildren. She will be remembered and missed for her fierce independence, lively conversation and commitment to her beliefs. Nona was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years,Robert Glenn Dawson, in 1999.
The family sincerely thanks the many staff members of Silver Creek Assisted Living who cared for and loved Nona for 11 years. While at SC Nona received loving care, patience and understanding from a dedicated staff. Nona and her family were supported additionally with gentle, loving compassionate care for seven months from MultiCare Hospice. With all of these heroes Nona’s end of life was loving and comfortable. The family requests no flowers but ask you to consider making a charitable donation of your choice in Nona’s honor.
The family welcomes everyone to graveside services on April 10 at 1:30, Mountain View Funeral Home with a Celebration of Life to follow at Elk Plain Grange, 21817 Mountain Hwy E., Spanaway.
