Willie Jerome "Scooty" Walker's Obituary
Willie Jerome “Scooty” Walker born in Petersburg, VA, on March 30, 1941, was the last surviving child of the late Herbert James Walker and Esther Irene (Wallace) Walker. Excelling in math and science he graduated from Peabody High School.
On June 23, 1961, Willie enlisted in the United States Air Force where he honorably served his country with distinction. On May 24, 1964, he married the late Gloria Veronica Hue and from this union was born one daughter, Natalie Marie Walker. During his stellar military career, Willie received many awards and commendations including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation with one oak leaf cluster, the Air Force Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with a bronze service star, the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Device, and the Air Force Longevity Medal to name a few. He was honorably discharged and retired from the military on November 1, 1985.
On June 9, 1986, Willie began an exemplary 20 year career of public service for the State of Washington as an invaluable member of the Department of General Administration (GA). His years of supervisory skills, dedication, hard work and expertise served him well in the Services Division, Materials Management Center and Central Stores. He retired from the GA on June 30, 2006.
During his retirement, Willie was able to truly enjoy the fruits of his labor. He was an engineer at heart and could fix just about anything. He enjoyed many hobbies including mechanics, amateur radio, computers, and gadgets. Willie truly loved getting out in the sportsman’s paradise, the Pacific Northwest, where he enjoyed fishing and especially hunting with his beloved beagles.
Willie was tenacious and hard working. Despite life-threatening challenges over the years, he was still able to enjoy a richly, blessed life that took him all over the world and afforded him the opportunity to take full advantage of his well-earned and well-deserved retirement. He was strong until the very end and even as he battled his last life-threatening illness he did so on his terms and entered into his heavenly home in peace surrounded by love.
Willie leaves to cherish his memory a beloved daughter, Natalie M. Walker; four sisters-in-law, Vivian S. Walker, Faith Kitson, Shelby Gardner and Jacqui Kitson; one brother-in-law, Nicholas Kitson; his nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly: Diane E. Walker, Mary E. Bowman (with whom he was very close), Diane M. Walker, Ashley M. Walker, Dolly E. Williams, Joseph “Butch" Walker, Edward “Faheem Rasool” Walker, Charles L. Walker, Clifford E. Walker and Michael W. Brown; Chann Quezada who was like a daughter to him and her children Reuben, Angelica and Alex; the Dorham family; a dear cousin, Betty Jean Smith; many great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins and friends, especially Julio Davila-Perez and Bonnie Kalalau and family; and lastly, his beloved hunting crew who miss him very much: Sam, Sheila, Hope, Jack, Scooter and Charlie.
