William "Gary" Smiley's Obituary
William "Gary" Smiley, 82, passed away peacefully into the presence of Jesus on February 12, 2025, in Tacoma, Washington, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on December 2, 1942, in Centralia, Illinois, Gary lived a life enriched by curiosity, laughter, and a deep love for knowledge. He proudly served as a cook in the Air Force and was a professional cook throughout most of his life. He even once appeared as a cook in a John Wayne movie as an extra! His career culminated in his dream job of being a prep cook at Johnny's Dock in Tacoma for over 20 years, where his outstanding soups were renowned.
A devoted scholar of theology, politics, history, geography, and more, Gary found comfort in the written word. A life-long learner, he was an avid reader and enthusiastic collector of books. His faith and his family were central to his life, and he and his family enjoyed worshipping together at Evangelical Reformed Church for close to 20 years.
A fascinating man with a big heart, he loved to listen and talk with others. Gary’s infectious, bright smile and hearty, contagious laugh were a gift to those who knew him. His love of airplanes and adventure led him and his adored wife, Jane, to explore new places with wonder and excitement, creating treasured memories together. They traveled both in the United States—two favorites were a bus tour on Route 66 and a wonderful train trip to Portland, OR, with their grandchildren—and around the world to China, Israel, Egypt, Greece, Russia, India, France, Australia, New Zealand, Peru, Argentina, and more!
He was preceded to heaven by his infant son, Tory Joshua, and is survived by his beloved, devoted wife of 56 years, Jane Smiley; his daughter, Jeri (John) Carr; his four cherished grandchildren: Ellen, Calvin, Eva, and Lucius; and many other loving family members.
A memorial service will be held on March 12, 2025, at Evangelical Reformed Church, located at 7435 S Madison St., Tacoma, Washington, 98409. The service will begin at 10:30 AM, and a reception will follow.
May his memory bring comfort to all who had the privilege of knowing him.
