William P. Hayes
Ret. Staff Sergeant William P. Hayes passed into eternal rest on June 1, 2012. He was born August 30, 1926 to William and Mamie Hayes in Selma, Alabama. Shortly after his birth, they moved to Kansas City, Missouri, where he graduated from Lincoln High School. After attending one semester of college, he enlisted into the United States Army, where he served as a supply officer for the mess hall for 30 years. During his service, he was stationed at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, where he met Miss Evelyn Evans, and courted her for a year before they were married May 19, 1954 in Columbia, South Carolina. During their union, they had four children, Frerechi, Bruce, Cedric, and Atrell. William and Evelyn traveled around the world before he was stationed at Ft. Lewis, Washington in May of 1969 and retired Sept. 1, 1975. He later worked as a cook at the Pierce County Jail. William was preceded in death by his mother, Mamie Hayes-Mitchell, and his sister, Frankie May Hayes. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 58 years and 14 days, Evelyn Hayes, his children; Frerechi Hayes, Bruce Hayes, Cedric Hayes and Atrell House; son-in-law, Robert House; grandchildren, Jessica Blake, Jenetta Blake, and Rosie House, and great-grandson Micah Blake. William will be greatly missed by his family and a host of friends. Services will be held at 4602 S 56th Street, Tacoma, WA 98409 on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at 1:00 PM. Reception will follow.
