William O'Connell's Obituary
William J. O'Connell, Sr. November 2, 1922 - December 19, 2011 Our beloved father and grandfather Bill was a native Tacoman who served his country in WWII as a B-24 bomber pilot. He graduated from UPS and taught in public schools for 30 years. In his youth, Bill played semi-pro baseball. He worked at Longacres for 25 years. He was a three-term state representative from the old 28th DIstrict. Bill also served as president of the teachers' union, and was active in the Tacoma Little Theater and entertained his audience in several lead roles. Bill was a member of the Tacoma Elks for 50 years. He was a friend of Bill W. and Bob for many years. He married Edna Cavin, and they are survived by three sons, William Jr., James, and Timothy, and a daughter, Melissa. Bill is also survived by six grandchildren and many family members in California, as well as favorite dog Pooter. Later in life Bill loved walking and playing bridge, and he was tough to beat at cribbage. "I have loved my children and grandchildren even before they were born.
