Webster Llewellyn Saugen's Obituary
Webster L. Saugen, Web Saugen passed away peacefully on Monday, May 5th after an extended illness. He was 84 years old. Web was born on January 9, 1924 on the family dairy farm in Osseo, WI, the only child of Carl W. and Esther L. Saugen. The family moved to Tacoma in 1929 where Web graduated from Stadium High School in 1942. Work and college studies as a pre-med student occupied his time until being called to active military duty. Web served in WWII in the Army's 104th Infantry Division and participated in the Battle of the Bulge (European Theater). Upon returning home in 1945, he enrolled in the College of Pharmacy at Washington State, where he graduated with honors in 1950. Web then moved to Parkland, WA where he was employed as a pharmacist at Johnson's Parkland Drugs. In 1951 he married the love of his life, Marjorie Posnick, whom he met at WSU. Marj and Web made their home in Lakewood, WA, where they raised four children. In 1963 they built a custom home in Thornewood where the family enjoyed growing up on American Lake. Web was a pharmacist and owner of Johnson's Drug for 37 years, and thereafter worked part-time for another 8 years. After retirement, Web enjoyed oil painting, traveling, and especially spending time with his children and grandchildren. After 43 years of marriage, Web lost his beloved Marj in 1995 at the age of 65. Web was active in his community, pharmacy profession, schools, and the Catholic Church. His involvement extended to Board positions with the WA State Pharmacy Association, WSU Pharmacy Advisory Board, St. Francis Cabrini School, Bellarmine Prep School, and Pierce County Catholic Education Board. He was very proud of his role as the Chairman of the Tri School Committee, which resulted in the consolidation of the Catholic high schools in Tacoma (Bellarmine, Aquinas Academy and St Leo's). In addition to his many friends, Web will be dearly missed by his son Douglas and wife Vickie of Lakewood, daughter Deborah and husband Steven Terrien of Issaquah, daughter Stacie of Manhattan Beach, CA, and daughter Shireen, also of Manhattan Beach, CA. Web was also the proud grandfather to Tyler and Jessica Saugen, Lauren and Spencer Terrien, and Cooper Joseph. Web was a kind, compassionate, loving man who always took the time to say a kind word to his friends and neighbors. We will all deeply miss his sense of humor, creativity, citizenship and love. The family would like to thank Dr. Robert Osborne, the nurses, therapists and staff at Good Samaritan Hospital, and the Lakewood Health Care Center for their compassion and care. A memorial for Web will held at 12:00 pm Friday, May 16, 2008 in the Garden Chapel at Mountain View Cemetery. A reception celebrating Web's life will follow at the Thornewood Castle, located at 8601 Thorne Lane SW, Lakewood. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to honor Webster's memory with contributions to the 21st Century Fund, an endowment for St. Francis Cabrini students. Donations can be sent to 5505 108th St. SW. Lakewood, WA 98499.
