Smith, Virginia Castro's Obituary
Virginia Castro Smith, lovingly known as Ginny, Vicki or Gigi, passed away peacefully on April 5, 2026, Easter Sunday, at the age of 81.
Born in Puebla, Mexico to Colonel Eduardo Castro and Margarita Gamez, Virginia lived a life defined by warmth, curiosity, and a deep love for people. Her journey took her to many places over the years, including Germany and Rhode Island, before she ultimately made her home in Lakewood, Washington.
Virginia devoted much of her life to caring for and nurturing others as an early childhood educator. She had a special gift for connecting with children and believed deeply in the importance of learning, creativity, and kindness from an early age. Her passion for helping others extended far beyond the classroom. She volunteered her time to bring arts and cultural experiences to those who might not otherwise have access, especially underprivileged children, reflecting her belief that beauty and creativity should be shared with everyone.
She found joy in the outdoors and the arts, whether hiking scenic trails, walking along the water with friends and family, snowshoeing in winter landscapes, or immersing herself in music, culture, and creative expression at home and through being a world traveller. Wherever she went, she carried a spirit of joy, generosity, and enthusiasm that uplifted those around her.
Virginia will be remembered most for her happiness and her unwavering willingness to help others. She had a kind heart, a welcoming presence, and a way of making people feel cared for and seen. Her positivity and compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her.
She is survived by her loving husband, Stephen, her sons, Walter (Nicole) and Daniel, her cherished grandchildren, Amelie (17) and Owen (15), her siblings Hilda, Rebeca, and Eduardo, and nephews, and extended family including the Llewellyns. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and her family was the center of her world.
A service to celebrate Virginia’s life will be held at Mountain View on April 16 at 11:00 a.m. The service will be streamed.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Big Brother Big Sisters of Puget Sound.
Virginia’s life was a beautiful reflection of kindness, generosity, and joy. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
