Vicki Lynn Scherer's Obituary
On December 7, 2023, Vicki Lynn Scherer (Wood, Turnbow, Owens) left this life in her sleep and at peace. She was 72.
Vicki was born in a taxicab on South Tacoma Way while on the way to the hospital to Lois and Sam Turnbow of Tacoma, WA on November 10th, 1951. As a child she traveled to many places as her father's Army service required with sisters Kathleen and Sherry and brothers Sam Jr. and James; from Alaska and California to Texas and South Carolina, and as far as Okinawa, Japan. When she left home she went to California and met and married Stan "Rick" Owens and had three sons, Jason, Jarrod and Joshua. Together they moved from California to Arizona and Utah. Ever since leaving home she talked to her mother on the phone nearly every day and continued throughout her life.
If there's anything to be said about Vicki, she was fun and friendly in all things, work and play. Whether as a school bus driver in Tucson, a bus driver at Ft. Lewis upon her return to Tacoma and her final job as an Army supply clerk, she was fast friends with so many, and so many of these friendships lasted until the end of her life. If you found yourself in a waiting room with her or in a line next to her, you were guaranteed to receive her friendliness and her laughter.
It was while working as a supply clerk that she met her husband, Al Scherer. They were married in Coeur d'Alene, ID on June 8th, 1990. She found someone that could match her wit and her heart, and the jokes they would share and trade became a language unto its own. As life brought challenges to Vicki's health, Al was always there for her throughout many doctor appointments and hospital stays and together, despite the circumstances, they would keep any medical staff on their toes with their sharp banter.
Raising her boys was her great adventure and undeniably a great challenge. Jarrod and Josh were born to be quite tall, and life likes to hammer the nail that sticks up a little harder. But she had a strength and a fury to match their height and led the way through the many battles that life can bring and taught them how to fight as well, raising them into the finest examples of men and fathers she could. As they grew up and moved forward with their lives, she would talk to them both on the phone nearly every day throughout her life.
She is preceded in death by her son Jason Owens and her brother James Turnbow.
She is survived, missed and loved by her: Parents - Lois & Sam Turnbow. Sister - Kathleen Turnbow, her children Jennifer (David) Smith and Brian (Susie) Sturgill. Brother – Sam Turnbow Jr, his children Raquel (Paul) Noonan and Rebecca Turnbow. Sister – Sherry (Perry) Hunt (Turnbow), their children Chelsea (Sam Hansen) Fletcher and Samantha (Aaron) Adams. Husband – Al Scherer., Son – Jarrod (Carrie) Owens, their children Jackson, Claire and Maxwell. Son – Joshua (Sherrie) Owens, their child Odin. There are numerous cousins, second cousins, grand nieces and nephews and so many more of relation or otherwise that she loved with all her heart that will miss her.
Viewing and services will be held at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood on Monday December 18th, 2023. Viewing will be held from 10am until 1pm, memorial will begin 1:30pm.
