Vern Krohn's Obituary
Go West Young Man
Vern Krohn was born in McLean, Nebraska to parents, Rudolph and Helen Pearl Krohn. In his youth, Vern was very energetic and enjoyed the company of his siblings. His sister recalls her younger brother being “typical,” noting that her bike suddenly lost parts as Vern’s gained them. Despite the antics, the two remained very close throughout their lives. Vern and his family followed his sister Maxine out to the Pacific Northwest when Vern was 14 years of age, and he remained a steadfast “Tacoma Boy” for most of his life.
The War Has Many Lessons
Vern enrolled in the Army following his graduation from Lincoln High School. In the 1950’s, Vern was part of the team sent over to assist in the rebuild of Europe. His group built camps near the beaches. It was here that Vern served as a chef and developed his love for cooking. In this role, he also developed a disposition to be neat and organized; a trait that would prove beneficial. Following service overseas, Vern remained connected to his military roots. He was heavily involved with the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He participated in parades and assisted in Military Honors when fellow comrades passed away. Vern was very proud of his military duties and the time he served, devoted to his country.
Post War Pastimes
Except for being married for a short period of time, Vern was an independently active person. Following his term of service, Vern pursued studies in college and earned his Business Degree. With this education, he began work for Boeing in the field of aerospace. Vern remained with Boeing for 37 years. Outside of work, Vern pursed an interest in woodworking. Behind his home he organized a shop to allow for these skills to be honed. He also took an interest in artwork and gardening. He maintained an immaculate yard and flower beds which showcased his gardening prowess. His talents for cooking and cleaning never subsided, and his sister, Maxine, joked that her brother “would make a great WIFE for someone!” After retirement, Vern relocated to Arkansas.
Coming Home
Vern passed away on May 29, 2012. He was returned to Tacoma, the place he really loved, to rest with his family. His sister and cherished friend, Maxine, notes that Vern’s passing is the loss of a fun, energetic, caring, independent, active, serious, hardworking, and loving man.
