Veanne Mae Young's Obituary
“He will swallow up death forever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces." - Isaiah 25:8
With grieving hearts we are sharing the passing of our Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, Veanne Mae Young, 92, of Tacoma, Washington. On April 28, 2025 she left this world surrounded by her loving family, who cherished her deeply.
Born in Tacoma, Washington, to Thomas (Tommy) and Martha (Mart) Thompson, Veanne was the second of two children, with an older brother, Merrill (Buck) C. Thompson. She grew up in Tacoma, attending Lincoln High School, where she was a member of the “Big Six,” a social group through which she met her future husband, George Young. Though shy, Veanne truly came to life when she put on her roller skates—sparkling with joy and grace.
In June 1951, Veanne graduated from high school. George sold his beloved airplane in order to purchase an engagement ring for the person he loved even more than flying, Veanne! They married and the following year began building their beautiful life together, welcoming Daughter, Jaelyn Tusow in 1952. Followed by three Sons: Daniel Young, Timothy Young, and James Young. Their home was a place of warmth, love, and incredible cooking—where cinnamon rolls, shrimp and chicken over rice, homemade ice cream, cherry dump cake, peanut brittle, and beloved Scotcheroos filled the kitchen and belly’s of family and guests alike.
Veanne joined Nalley’s Fine Foods in 1970, working in the pickle plant for 17 years before retiring in 1987. Throughout her career, she made lifelong friends and left a lasting impact on those she worked with.
After retirement, Veanne and George moved to Mason Lake, where she found joy in hummingbirds, summer flowers, family gatherings, and stunning sunsets. She also had a passion for visiting casinos—whether traveling to Reno or playing the slots locally, she loved the excitement and rarely left empty-handed, often saying, “I am not leaving until my money is gone!"
In her later years, Veanne lived in Tacoma with her son Tim, treasuring time spent with family and friends. Her love and kindness were contagious—she loved deeply, sincerely, and without judgment.
Veanne’s legacy lives on through her four children, nine grandchildren, and many special great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, husband, and in-laws.
Her family will continue to honor her memory and celebrate the remarkable woman she was. We will be celebrating Veanne’s life on May 31st, 2025 at: 13702 20th Ave East, Tacoma WA 98445; 1p to 3p. All who wish to attend are welcome.
