I first met Tom many years ago, when he enrolled in the Pierce County Master Gardener Program. I was the Wash. State Univ. Horticulture Agent for the county and I was responsible for the program.
Tom was a gardener first class! With his extensive and distinguished military background, he became an immediate asset to us. I was military at one time myself, so we had a common ground from which to function as friends and Master Gardeners.
Tom was the leader of the Master Gardener Clinic at McChord-Fort Lewis A/F Base Exchange and it was the best organized and most effective company of volunteers we had. It always functioned perfectly because of Tom's fine organizational abilities.
He invited me many times to be a guest speaker at his clinic and continued to include me even after I retired; it was always a pleasurable experience to work with him. His dedication to WSU and Pierce County was absolute;despite suffering so much orthopedic discomfort and in spite of painful setbacks, he always did a splendid job and achieved a great sense of accomplishment and satisfaction in this last career.
Each year Tom and Kitty generously opened their home and rose-filled garden to the McChord MGs and spouses for a get-together away from work. My wife Susi and I always felt grateful and honored to be included in this annual occasion.
We are both deeply saddened at Tom's passing and wish to extend our most heartfelt condolences to all of you in his family. You have lost a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, and we have lost an enthusiastic Master Gardener, rosarian and good friend.
