Mister Balaban was an irreplaceable icon at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was the first person in the building on Sunday morning no matter the weather to flip the switch to heat the building for the church service. His dedication knew no bounds. Always ready to share a joke as he had a wonderful sense of humor. Quite dapper with a boutonniere tucked in his lapel, gave him an aire of dignity and purpose. Tom had high standards regarding his head usher position and everyone respected that fact. My husband and I were privileged to share many a coffee hour/potluck meal with dear Tom. So Tom, I wonder if you are one of the head ushers in heaven ? I can hear you whisper (loving laughter) a morning greeting and urging individuals to move closer to the pulpit.
