Thelma D. Buchanan's Obituary
Mrs. Thelma Davis Buchanan
The sun rose in Belzoni, Mississippi on May 4, 1927 bringing with it a new day and a new life. Thelma Davis was born to Sadie and Sidney Davis (both preceded her in death). Her childhood years were spent in Belzoni, Mississippi where she attended Belzoni Elementary and High School.
She gave her life to Christ at an early age. Thelma loved the Lord and enjoyed serving Him. She took an interest mainly in serving and doing whatever she could to assist those who had a need.
She later moved to Fort Smith, Arkansas where she met and married Mack Calvin Buchanan on June 22, 1953. Though she worked outside of the home, Thelma was a capable homemaker with a good and kind soul. Beneath her mortal cover, she was truly remarkable in many ways. In her heart was excessive love, unyielding faith and the courage of a thousand armies. While traveling with her husband on his many tours of duty, she always sought to be a friend, a helping hand, a peace maker among many, and sought never to be a burden or a divider of people.
Mother Buchanan and her husband Mack moved to Tacoma, Washington during his tour of duty at Fort Lewis. It was during that time that she united with the Altheimer Memorial C.O.G.I.C (then Emmanuel Temple C.O.G.I.C) under the leadership of the late R.E. Altheimer. While attending Altheimer Memorial, Thelma was led by the Lord to organize the United Christian Women Sick Committee. This was a passion of hers and she and her committee members held many fund-raising activities to make sure that anyone they knew who was sick, received a card with a love token in it just to say someone is thinking about you and we care. People receiving these cards were not always a member of a church, all Thelma wanted was an address of the sick and that person received something from the United Christian Women Sick committee. She served as the president of this committee until September of 2016.
In 1978 Thelma moved her membership to the Maranatha C.O.G.I.C. where she served under the leadership of the late Pastor Andrew J. Miller. There she remained a member for the next 12 years until she was led of the Lord to join the Holiness Chapel C.O.G.I.C. under the leadership of Superintendent Wilfred Allison. Mother remained a member of Holiness Chapel C.O.G.I.C. until the Lord called her from her earthly labor. While in these two churches Mother served on the Usher Board, Mother’s Board and continued the work of the United Christian Women Sick Committee.
Mother Buchanan was proceeded in death by her parents Sidney and Sadie Davis, six brothers, Sidney Davis Jr., Jefferson Davis, Otha Davis, Bud Bell Davis, Davil Davis Sr. and Obye Davis. Three sisters Elma Granderson, Mable Lewis, Amitty Davis St. Cyr. Her daughter Mary Alice Avery, grandson Roderick Avery and grand-daughter LaCreesha Avery.
Every day that Mother Buchanan spent on this earth she knew it was a gift from God and she willing passed that on to all whom she touched. To cherish her memory and celebrate her home going, she leaves her husband of 63 plus years Mack Calvin Buchanan, two grand-daughters Shanda Avery and Ava Avery both of Chicago, Davil Jr. (Sina Davis), Jimmy Davis and King Davis all of Auburn, Washington, Tommy Foster (Geneva) Chicago, god daughter Ann Prevost (Tyrone) god daughter Debra Seymour and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, grands and great grands, her church family and friends.
Services for Thelma will be held on Saturday January 28, 2017 at 12:00/PM at Altheimer Memorial COGIC, 1121 Altheimer St. Tacoma WA. Visitation will be held prior to service from 10:30/AM to 12:00/PM. Family and friends kindly invited.
