Terry Michael Stephens' Obituary
Retired Major Terry (Mike) Michael Stephens, a man of dedication, intellect, and a uniquely endearing character, passed away on July 25, 2025, in Tacoma, Washington, at the age of 78.
Born on May 2, 1947, in Lewiston, Idaho, to Charles (Steve) Curtis Stephens and Eleanore Florence Stephens (née Wilsey), Mike’s life was one of continuous learning and service. He pursued his passions with vigor, earning a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Eastern Washington University in 1969, followed by a Master’s degree in Geography from the University of Denver in 1975. His expertise led to licensure as a Washington State Geologist, a testament to his commitment to his field.
Mike’s dedication to service extended beyond his academic pursuits. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1969 until his retirement in 1989. His years of service reflected a deep sense of duty and a commitment to protecting the values he held dear. Following his distinguished military career, Mike continued to serve his community, working for the Environmental Services Office of the Washington Department of Transportation from 1998 until 2012.
Mike was more than just his professional accomplishments. He was a man of diverse interests – a passionate geologist, an aviation enthusiast, a skilled photographer, and a dedicated teacher. He embraced the world through travel and found solace in the beauty of nature through hiking and volksmarching.
Those who knew Mike well will remember his…distinct personality. He was a man not afraid to express his mind, often displaying a characteristic grumpiness. He was famously frugal, a trait perhaps best exemplified by his steadfast insistence on preparing his own taxes. Yet, beneath that exterior lay a generous heart, evidenced by his consistent contributions to his family church in Shelton, Faith Lutheran.
Mike was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy Kay. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Elaine, his three granddaughters – Amber, Viktoria, and Michalea – and his great-granddaughter, Coraline. He leaves behind a legacy of service, knowledge, and a unique spirit that will be deeply missed.
We will lay Mike to rest on August 15, 2025, at 1:30 PM at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood, Washington. As we say our final goodbyes, let us remember Mike not just for who he was, but for the impact he had on all of our lives. May he rest in peace.
