Susan Bevis Moffat's Obituary
Susan Bevis Moffat
7/18/1949 to 6/27/2019
Susan "Sue" Moffat passed away in the early hours June 27, 2019 at Tacoma General Hospital.
Although being born in Aberdeen, Maryland, Sue spent most of her life in the Pacific Northwest. She graduated in 1968 from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, WA. A natural beauty, she took several modeling jobs for local businesses (including an announcement for the new Boeing 747) and was a runner up in the Miss Port of Tacoma pageant. Susan then used her earnings to pursue her dream of moving to Hawaii for several years, indulging her love of sun, surf and sand.
Upon returning from her Hawaiian adventures, Sue earned an associate degree from Tacoma Community College and started a career as a para-legal for the Department of Assigned Council. It was during this time that she met up with a former high school friend, Dennis McBreen. They eventually married and had two children, Jacob and Shauni. Although the marriage didn’t last, their friendship did, and they kept in touch throughout their lives until Denney’s death from lung cancer in the spring of 2016.
Sue was extremely artistic and was usually in some stage of a needle pointing, crocheting or pottery project. She loved gardening; her flower beds and pots were arranged with care and detailed attention to placement of each individual plant, maximizing vibrancy and visual aesthetics.
With two small children, the rigors of working full time in the legal profession were taking her away too much from her family. Susan then established her own business, McBreen Talent Agency. She worked to find employment in the entertainment and advertising industry from the local population. Susan enjoyed the opportunities this afforded her; meeting people from all walks of life, setting her own hours and working from home.
As her children grew, she eventually sold her talent agency and took a job as the principal’s secretary in the Tacoma Public School District at Wilson High School. As well as her official duties, she donated much of her time to the cheer team, on which her daughter Shauni was a member.
Susan had the good fortune to fall in love again and marry her second husband Marshall Moffat. They purchased a house overlooking Commencement Bay and vacationed frequently at their condo in Puerta Vallarta. They remained together until his death from pancreatic cancer in the spring of 2018.
She always had a soft spot in her heart for animals of all kinds; some forlorn, mixed breed dog was constantly present at her side. Providing comfort and solace during the last portion of her life were her two rescue dogs Willie and Chuckie and stray cat Whiskers.
Susan is survived by her son Jacob (Jenna) McBreen of Shoreline, WA; daughter Shauni (Alex) Wachtel of Puyallup, WA; grandsons Dane and Cole Wachtel; sister Kim (Mark) Halsey of Puyallup, WA; nephews Erik (Emma) Halsey of Puyallup, WA and Tom (Tori) Halsey of Graham, WA; grand-nieces Rylie and Eliza. She was preceded in death by parents Nancy and Barry Bevis, and her brother and best friend Jeff Bevis.
At her request, there will be no public service.
A private celebration of life will be held by her immediate family members at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please donate in her name to the American Cancer Society, the ASPCA or animal rescue group of your choice.
