I have such fond memories of adventures with my sister, Peggy Ellingsen, and my late brother-in-law, Steve Carlsen, in the 1980s and 1990s. Together (and often in the company of daughters Kristin, Kim, and Bethany) we explored everything from tide-pooling to mountaintop experiences. I think this photo from about 1980, with the terrain of Sperry Glacier in the background, captures the way Steve could look into the vastness of realms known in a special way only by him: math, music, genius computer innovations, and the many mysteries of life. And in my experience, he was always available to come back to Earth for warmth and friendship. I miss you, Steve, Rest well now. - Kris Ellingsen

We have many, many memories that are likely fused with our many "slides" taken over the decades with each daughter's birth, all of our many meals together, and many adventures taken. One memory was getting together to watch the movie, "The Christmas Story," which is now a classic that we've seen dozens of times each Christmas. Another memory was having Kristin in a backpack, so we could all go cross country skiing on the Minnesota River bottoms. I remember worrying about what would happen if Steve fell with that darling baby on his back. I also recall the many stories that evolved from Kristin crying and colicky, so Steve would need to drive her around for hours at night to avoid the risk of eviction from married student housing. Another "adventure" came from our trips to Orchestra Hall to hear the iconic "King's Singers," in the late 70's/early 80's, so we could listen to Bach Oratorio's, Lessons, and Fugues. Steve's introduction to tide pooling on the coast introduced us to the "art" of appreciating life along the coast. Steve took us to Pike Street Market on a trip where he picked out halibut and grilled it. Nummm. That was a memorable experience, despite having no recollection of any other part of the meal! Steve was really a Renaissance Man. He left an indelible mark on our lives, and now, he has a living legacy in his remarkable, beautiful daughters that we adore.
