Sigrid M. Nelson's Obituary
Surrounded by her family, Sigrid Mary Nelson (née Mattson) went home to the Lord on August 7, 2013. She was 93 years old.
Sigrid was born on April 2, 1920 and grew up over the family's general store in Brantford, North Dakota with her parents, John and Edna Mattson, and younger sister Luella. The family relocated to Tacoma, Washington in 1936. Sigrid graduated from Stadium High School. She married Donald (alias "Jimmy") Nelson in 1939. They were blessed with four children, Doug of Redondo Beach, California; Diane (Bob) Reed; Lynn (Mike) Stone, (former son-in-law Jerry Ehnat); and Kristi (Tom) Hamre. She was a beloved grandma to 9 grandchildren: Cindy (Imad) Bahbah, Scott (Angie) Reed, Becky (Rob) Herriford, Connie (Steve) Sanders, David (Stephanie) Ehnat, Laura Hamre, Sarah Hamre, Rachel (James) Topper, and Ben Hamre, 14 great-grandchildren: Ryan, Steven (Shanna), Elise, Payton, Hanna, Tony, Amy, Stephan, Joelle, Bobby, Jessica, Trenton, Connor, and Tripp, and 4 great-great grandchildren: Ethan, Steven, Skylar, and Kimber, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Sigrid retired from the consumer credit and real estate departments at Puget Sound National Bank after 26 years of service (1956-1982). She made lifelong friends at work and at church, including her close friend Virginia; and delighted in meeting up with the "lunch bunch" every month, including Alyce, Myrna, Sabina, Esther, and Mary. A Puyallup resident for 30 years, she appreciated the kindness of Gary, Mary Jane, and honorary-grandson Zack, and her many other caring neighbors.
She was an avid card player. She and her favorite card-partner, brother-in-law Oliver, would regularly challenge Donald and sister-in-law, Mary, to a game of whist. She also enjoyed shopping, golfing, and skiing. She was interested in gathering genealogy information, and was proud of her Scandinavian heritage. Most of all she loved spending time with her family, friends, and neighbors. She couldn't go anywhere without meeting an acquaintance or good friend.
She is preceded in death by Donald, her husband of 61 years (2000), her daughter Diane (1993), and other family members and friends.
Memorial service will be held on August 18, 2:00 PM at Peace Lutheran in Puyallup, followed by a reception. Private graveside service at Mountain View Memorial Park, Lakewood to be held at a later date.
Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home.
