Shirley Furseth Muntz
Shirley was born Dec. 23,1931, in Tacoma, the daughter of Andrew & Mae Furseth of Browns Point. Shirley attended Jason Lee junior High, and Stadium High School class of 1949.
Shirley passed away on September 11, 2016.
Shirley was the first Queen of the Browns Point Salmon Bake in 1948. She attended Pacific Lutheran College before moving with her parents to Portland,Oregon.
On March 31,1951, she married Robert Muntz of Tacoma, and together they had four children, Andrew [Leslie] of Edmonds, Wa., Tom [Linda] of Federal way, Eileen Hudak [Mark] of Tacoma,, and Diane Moore [Mike] of Gig harbor.
Shirley continued her education, graduating from the University of Puget Sound in 1972.
Shirley had eight grandchildren, Nathan Muntz, Aaron Muntz, Jacob Moore, Kaylee DeBeck, Christian Moore, Jonathan Hudak, Amanda Hudak, and Jordan Hudak, plus three great grandchildren, Adilyn & Brody Muntz, and Theo Hudak. Shirley had many cousins in Norway.
For many years Shirley served as the Treasurer of The Tacoma Seafarers Center in Tacoma. Both she and Bob volunteered at The Washington State History Museum for 16 years until her illness in 2011.
She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church for 65 years, serving in many capacities particularly in The Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.
She served as President of Aux. # 202, of The National Association Of Letter Carriers.
Shirley was proud of her Norwegian heritage and was a member of The Sons Of Norway. It was that Viking spirit that helped her in her five year struggle with ovarian cancer.
The family wants to thank Dr. Saffari & Julie Peerboom for their kindness to Shirley, and also to those of the Infusion Center at St. Joseph Hospital for their kindness these many years. A special thanks to Nicole Johnson of Franciscan Hospice for her help & to those wonderful people at The Franciscan Hospice House.
A memorial service for Shirley will be held on Monday, September 19th at 2 pm at Zion Lutheran Church. 3410 6th Avenue, Tacoma, WA.
In lieu of flowers, family would prefer donations be made to the Tacoma Seafarers Center or towards Ovarian cancer research.
Shirley is now at last free from pain and safe in the arms of Jesus whom she loved.
