Shirley F. Merchant's Obituary
Shirley F. Merchant, a longtime resident of the Tacoma area, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on December 31, 2025, in Tacoma, Washington, at the age of 93. Born on March 12, 1932 in Northport, Washington, Shirley grew up with a deep appreciation for community, family and the simple joys of life – values she carried with her throughout her many decades in the Tacoma region.
Shirley is predeceased by her husband of 34 years, Noah David Merchant, children Robbie Merchant and Sherry (John) Huston, her sisters Mary (Alfred) Quincy and Anna Mae Stringer. She is survived by her partner of 32+ years, John Makebakken, her sister Sharon (Bug) Quincy, her children Guy Merchant, Terry (Pete) Kotze and Cary (Bonnie) Merchant, 8 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
As a young wife and mother, Shirley took on the challenges of being married to a flight engineer in the United States Air Force with a smile and a happy heart. She enjoyed traveling, camping and fishing. After retirement Shirley and John spent their winters in Yuma, AZ for 32 years. Her hobbies were Square Dancing and a good game of Pinnochle.
Shirley was happiest when her family was all together in one spot for Holidays and other special occasions. She will be sorely missed by so many dear friends and family.
