Shirley J Mayer's Obituary
Shirley Jean Lois Mayer, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2024, in Tacoma, Washington at 95 years old. Born on October 28,1928, in Duluth, Minnesota to O. George and Emilie Olson. Shirley had two sisters, Helen and Beverly and one brother, Robert. Shirley lived a life full of grace, warmth, and with vibrant energy.
While attending Teacher’s College in Bemidji, MN, she met her future husband Raymond Benjamin (Bud) White. They were married on June 5, 1948. Bud joined the Army and together hey traveled the world through his assignments, but eventually settled down in Tacoma, Wa. Together, they built a loving family that flourished under their care and guidance including their five beautiful children.
Both passionate travelers, Shirley and Bud were very involved in the Good Sams RV Club. Her zest for exploration was matched only by her deep faith and unwavering commitment to her family. Shirley held down many jobs over the years, but really focused her time on raising the family. Her faith was a cornerstone of her life, guiding her through both joys and challenges with a spirit of hope and resilience. This resilience helped her with the death of her beloved husband Bud after an unexpected ailment in 1978.
After many years of friendship that grew over their shared love of travel and the RV lifestyle, Shirley married fellow RVer, Harry Mayer. They continued their travel and helped to mentor her grandchildren.
Shirley’s family will remember her not only for her adventurous spirit but also for her warmth, kindness, and the many stories she shared. She had an innate ability to make everyone feel special and loved.
Shirley is survived by her five cherished children: Nancy White of Tacoma, WA, Gary White of Fredrickson, WA, Karen Sheppard of Tacoma, WA, Tam (Susan) White of Orofino, ID and Sharon White of Newport News, VA. Her legacy also includes seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, all of whom were blessed to know her boundless love and wisdom.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, sisters and brother.
