Samuel G. Hewston's Obituary
Samuel George Hewston was born November 3, 1925 and died September 10, 2018. He was born to parents John and Jessie Hewston in Mrs. Anna Warren's house, where his family lived at the time, in Roy, Washington. He was named after his great-grandparents, Dr. Samuel Warren, a founder of the city of Roy, and Dr. George Hewston, of San Francisco.
The family moved from Mrs. Warren's home to a rented house across town when he was five years old. His last preschool years and most of his grade school years were spent while he lived on the edge of this small country town, where he became active in outdoor pursuits and sports while at Roy Grade School. The family moved to South Tacoma for two years where he finished grade school. Then they moved to Lakeview (now Lakewood) in 1938, where Sam finished his schooling at Clover Park Junior High and High School, graduating in 1943. He was involved in school sports there.
After his schooling, Sam served over two years in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was out in the Pacific area most of that time as a signal corps radio communication specialist. After the War he and his brother John enrolled at Pacific Lutheran College (now University) Where he received a BA Degree and a Teaching Certificate. His primary employment was as a therapist at American Lake Veteran's Hospital. Due to a physical disability, he eventually had to resign and remained in the Lakewood (formerly Lakeview) area the remainder of his life.
He enjoyed traveling to horse race tracks around the western US to watch a thoroughbred race horse or two which he owned. Annually, until his later years, he would visit Honolulu for a vacation in the sun.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jessie Hewston. He leaves his brother Dr. John G. Hewston, of Arcata, California and nieces, Jyl Hewston and Joni Aitken of Eureka, CA and Jody Wood (Ed) of Harrisburg, OR.
Services will be at Mountain View Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Lakewood, on Friday, September 21, 2018, at 2:30 pm.
