Ruth R Smith's Obituary
Ruth Smith, of University Place, WA, passed away at the age of 89 on May 16th, 2017 in her home, surrounded by family. She was born on March 3rd, 1928 to Eduard and Olga Rinas in Cando, ND. In 1947 she traveled with her sister to Tacoma, where she met the love of her life, Dick Smith, while working at a local architect firm. After a short engagement they were married, and this year on June 3rd they would have celebrated 67 years of marriage. Ruth had a passion for gardening, golfing, and playing bridge. She was a longtime member of Fircrest Golf Club, a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church for over 50 years, and very involved in community activities in the past. Ruth was deeply devoted to her family and many friends. She is survived by her husband Dick, daughters Jan Clark (Geoff) and Patti Pace (Ron), four grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, stepmother Lula, brother Ervin, and daughter Robin. Ruth will be missed by all. Her kind and gentle spirit touched many lives. The family wishes to thank all of the staff at Catholic Home Services for their compassionate and loving care given to Ruth. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 1315 North Stevens St., Tacoma, WA, on Friday, June 9th, at 1 P.M. In lieu of flowers, remembrances can be made in honor of Ruth to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society at https://www.lls.org/washingtonalaska.
