Ruth Challender's Obituary
Anna “Ruth” Challender, 101, of Tacoma, Washington, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2026.
Ruth was born on November 26, 1924, in Jackson, Tennessee, to Willie B. and Myrtle Green. She lived a long and meaningful life devoted to her family, whose love and presence were her greatest joy.
She is survived by her three children, Gloria Bishop; Melvin Fred Jr. (Karen) Challender; and Linda Elliott. She was blessed with a large and loving family, including 12 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren.
Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 70 years, Melvin Fred Challender; her nine siblings, Edith Carmichael, Elster Green, Chester Green, Taylor Green, Herbert Green, Horace Green, Melba Green, Virginia Fykes, and Willie B. Allen; and her grandson, Christopher Challender.
A viewing will be held on Sunday, April 12, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Mountain View Funeral Home. Ruth’s memorial service will take place on Monday, April 13, at 10:00 a.m., also at Mountain View Funeral Home in Lakewood, Washington.
Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in the many memories she gave us and the love she shared so freely. Her family was her greatest joy, and her influence will be felt for generations to come.
