Russell Hendren's Obituary
RUSSELL DEE HENDREN
March 21, 1942 – July 10, 2013
Russell was a principled loving man with a subtle sense of humor. He joined the Navy the day after he reached the minimum age for enlistment. He loved every minute in the Navy while serving at the US Naval Hospital in Bethesda, MD.
After Russell separated from the Navy, he moved to California to pursue higher education. He earned a BS in Biology; another BS in Nursing; and then went on to earn an MS in Nursing.
He joined the Army Reserves in order to serve in Desert Storm and after hostilities ended, Russell was honorably discharged as a Captain in the Army Nurse Corps.
From 1978 to 1980, he worked as a nurse at Stanford Univ. Medical Center. Between1987 to 1996 he worked as a nurse at the VA Medical Center in Palo Alto, achieving the position of Assistant Chief of Nursing for Psychiatry.
His life's passion was helping people - both as a nurse and as a friend.
Due his extensive work with the Basenji dog breed, he made friends all over the world. Russell is recognized world wide for improving the breed lines. He was honored by serving as a Judge in the Basenji Club of America's National Specialty dog show.
Russell traveled extensively throughout the world and made friends wherever he went. Russell also loved to paint with oils. His favorite things to paint were large, colorful abstracts. If anyone admired any of his works, he simply gave them away.
Russell was a genuine people person and people of all ages, nationalities and beliefs were drawn to this kind, loving man.
