Russell Dee Fulkerson's Obituary
Russ was born on May 13, 1930, to parents Ken and Gladys Fulkerson. He grew up in Aberdeen Washington, graduating from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen in 1948. His life in Grays Harbor was largely influenced by the role models that his parents provided and the connections he made through his involvement with Boy Scouts. He developed his love of bowling through his parents and continued to bowl throughout his life. Russ attended Grays Harbor College for one year and then transferred to Western Washington State College in 1949. While there he met June Dillman as they worked side-by-side in the kitchen in Edens Hall. Graduating in June 1952 and married on June 21, 1952, June and Russ entered a lifetime of commitment to each other and to their chosen profession of public education.
Russ and June started their teaching careers in the Franklin Pierce SD in 1952 and retired in 1982 after 30 years of service. In retirement Russ went on to teach math at Fort Steilacoom Community College (now Pierce College). Also in retirement, Russ enjoyed his work at the Puyallup Fair each year where he connected with many former students and colleagues while working as an usher in the Grandstands. His commitment to community was seen through the many years he spent as a volunteer through Celebrate Seniority – from driving the mobile health unit to fitting helmets for kids to his final years as a greeter and guide at Good Samaritan Hospital.
He faithfully led the Fitness Class at the Summit United Methodist for many years and could be seen walking at the South Hill Mall for years with June and in more recent years with Linda.
He was active to the end of his life still living alone, driving, and enjoying his time reading, watching Jeopardy and sports on TV (especially the WNBA Seattle Storm), and sharing meals and travels with Linda. He was involved with his daughter Susan as they were planning a celebration for his 95th Birthday. At 94 years, 11 months his heart decided it was done, and he passed suddenly and peacefully at home.
Russ was preceded in death by his wife June of nearly 60 years, his oldest daughter Ruth Anderson, his youngest daughter Julene Wallis and Julene’s husband Jim Wallis. His parents and only sibling Marilyn Mennet also preceded him in death. He is survived by his middle daughter Susan Fortin and her husband Marty. Surviving grandchildren include Kyle Wallis (wife Jordin Wallis) and Kate Fortin (partner Graham Parman). Great-grandchildren include Kyle and Jordin’s sons Will and Ben. Surviving family also include son-in-law Burr Anderson, daughter-in-law Barbara Wallis and close friend Jan Estep. Russ is also survived by his dear friend and loving companion of eight years, Linda Halterman.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Puyallup United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 24 at 1:00 PM. To honor Russ’s commitment to helping those in need, please consider a donation to Nourish Pierce County, 1702 South 72nd St., Ste E, Tacoma, WA 98408 or to your local food bank, youth outreach program or an agency of your choice focused on underserved or marginalized communities.
