Royal was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana to parents Gordon M. Stewart and Odeal Dunn Stewart. After graduation from McKinley High School he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.
He proudly served his country for over 20 years, traveling to many foreign countries and across the United States during his military service.
Royal met his wife Monika in Lakewood, WA and it was love at first sight. They were married on Sept. 9, 1967 at McChord Chapel. Sadly, Roy passed away 6 months before their 50th wedding anniversary. They had a very special and loving marriage up to the end.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1974, he went to work for the Federal Government/Federal Protective Agency, serving for twenty more years as a law enforcement officer retiring in 1995 at the rank of Captain/Regional Training Officer. Royal’s hobbies include golfing, gardening and reading as many books as he could.
Predeceased by his parents, brothers Thomas, Roosevelt, Edmond “Lee” and sister Estelle, Royal is survived by his devoted wife Monika, brother the Rev. Robert Stewart of Baton Rouge Louisiana, niece Pamela Simon, grandnephew Dorien Simon of Lakewood, WA, many other nieces and nephews in Louisiana and his forever Buddy of 52 years, Jim Walker, who is loved and greatly appreciated for his never ending friendship. Jim, thank you, thank you, thank you for always being there for us.
Roy was a very proud man, who was respected and well liked by many people. He will be remembered fondly and missed immensely.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer’s Association or Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research.
