Roy Gene Welch's Obituary
Roy Gene Welch Sr., age 67, passed away from a brain aneurysm Friday July 24, 2009. Roy was born August 18, 1941 in Tacoma, WA to James and Ida Welch. Roy was the "Good Ole Boy" on the Long Haul Road from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay for 30 years. He considered himself a true Alaskan Sourdough. Roy graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, WA. Roy started truck driving for Tam Engineering and drove for 16 years with them and ended his career with Sourdough Freight Lines of Fairbanks AK. Married to Barbara Jean Packard of Tacoma. They decided to move to Fairbanks, AK for the opportunity to be part of the new Alaska Pipeline. Roy earned the Alaskan Outstanding Trucker of the Year in 1997. Roy was a loving and devoted husband, dad and grandpa. He loved fishing (when in WA) at Lake Ohop, his second home. Roy Sr. is survived by his wife Barbara Jean Welch, his brother Jim Welch (Joanne), his children Roy Welch Jr., Dianna Fritz (Fred), Debbie Nelson (Russ), Cindy Hamlin, Catherine Shively (Terry), Darrell Hamlin, and Dennis Hamlin, his grandchildren Elizabeth, Tasha, Alex, Lilly, Mandy, Erin, Duncan, Genna, Crystal, Joel, and 5 great-grandchildren. A funeral/memorial in Roy's honor is planned for Saturday, August 8, 2009 at 2:00 in the Mountain View Aspen Chapel. His family invites all who enjoyed the pleasure of being part of Roy's life.
